How It All Started

From City Life to 100 Acres: The Bayboro Story

Like a lot of riders, Laura and Brian Healy grew up on horseback — and like a lot of riders, life eventually pulled them somewhere else. College, careers, and the pace of New York City took over, and horses became a memory instead of a weekend habit.

Brian and Laura built successful careers in the city — Laura in the pharmaceutical industry, Brian at one of the world's largest securities firms before launching his own consulting firm helping technology companies in emerging markets. But they always kept one foot in the country, commuting most weekends to a small house in Milford, Pennsylvania, just to breathe a little different air.

Then Laura signed up for a few riding lessons at a barn in New Jersey — almost on a whim. It woke up a part of her that had been dormant since childhood, and Brian wasn't far behind. One lesson led to another, and weekends in the country stopped being an escape from the city — they became the reason to come back.

Fifteen years later, that whim has become a life's work. Building Bayboro has meant an ongoing investment in learning: seeking out top trainers, riders, and specialists across every discipline as part of a continuous journey, not a destination. Brian closed the doors to his successful professional career to step into the world of equine management and made a deliberate decision to manage operations rather than training.  Separating the roles offered a balanced approach for the barn – we have seen over the years that when the trainer also ran the barn, it just didn’t work.  Between the two of them, they'll tell you the same thing — running Bayboro is, by far, the most demanding and most rewarding work they've ever done.
